2023 Sosua Carnival
The 2023 Sosua Carnival is on, happening on April 23rd, 2:00pm at the Helipad across Infiniti Blu. This is a great come back after the long pause we all saw for a couple of years, for the reason we all know. Ucasosua is the organizer, we look forward to be there and enjoy the parade and the comparsas with family and friends. After the long Easter week this is a refreshing event for locals and foreign tourists visiting that weekend, come with best friends and enjoy the show. If you plan to book a Sosua Catamaran that day try the morning so you can enjoy the Sosua Carnival show in the afternoon.
Location in Google Maps:
The Puerto Plata region has already celebrated several carnival events this year, including the Cabarete and Puerto Plata carnival. The Dominican carnival is the most important party in the country and the most important to endorse popular culture with a sense of freedom and identity. It begins in February in the different cities of the country and culminates in Santo Domingo where all the representatives of each city parade.
In this way, every Sunday in February, the entire town mingles in the streets, either in their localities or going to nearby towns to, daringly and wearing masks, costumes, colorful dresses and lots of joy, enjoy the parades. The great parade of the Dominican carnival is celebrated in the capital, in Santo Domingo, generally on the last Sunday of February, taking George Washington avenue on the boardwalk although the main point of most of the events, of the merriment, color and explosion of music and flavor, is the Enriquillo park.
The Puerto Plata carnival is celebrated in the malecon ocean drive, and the Cabarete Carnival right on the beach, making it a very special one ( last one this year was held on March 25th). Sosua now joins the parades and jumpstarts its own, with the 2023 Sosua Carnival; great news for locals and visitors.
As in most of the countries that were colonized by the Spanish, the Dominican carnival takes place preceding Lent, which is a time of penance and preparation for the Passion of Jesus Christ, but in this country there is a very special nuance that also relates to the party with the date of Independence of Haiti, February 27, 1844, so that all of February and even the first days of March are filled with music and colors.
Unlike other countries, the Dominican Republic separated from Spain in a friendly way, based on transactions that were not warlike or violent, but was unexpectedly invaded by the neighboring country Haiti, which tried to take away the Dominicans’ language and customs, as well as all that that was part of its essence like the carnival.
In fact, during the 22 years that the Dominican Republic was occupied by Haiti, the tradition of wearing costumes during religious celebrations was prohibited, but this could be recovered with Independence and, beyond that, this type of clothing that includes masks and masks, stopped being linked to religion and evolved in carnivals. That is why February becomes the epicenter of the exaltation of freedom, popular culture, of the essence of Dominicans, happy and dancing, with its carnival.
