Puerto Plata is the most important province of the North Dominican Republic, and one of the top tourist destinations in the island. This city has a rich, varied landscape that includes golden sand beaches, lush green forests, mountains, rivers, and a great diversity in its population as it is the top place for retirees from many countries.

The city was founded in 1502 by Nicolas de Ovando, near the start of Spanish colonization. Because of its natural beauty and beaches, it was to become the first all-inclusive tourist destination inside the Dominican Republic. 

Hotel complex Playa Dorada was the starting point, set along the beach with the same name, home to some of the best international hotel chains. A second similar complex, Costa Dorada, was added later on. Sosua, Cabarete, Costambar and Cofresi later became part of the tourism boom because of their beaches.

Puerto Plata has many great beaches, and right in town. Camacho beach (pictured above), Long beach, Cosita Rica beach, Acapulco beach ( all these are in the oceandrive -locally known as malecón. Other more important beaches are Playa Dorada, and Costa Dorada.

To this beach list add the ones in the other 4 beach towns and the list reaches near 50 beaches in total,  spread along the DR North Coast. Big cruise line ports such as Taino Bay and Amber Cove have reshaped the city with their daily visitors, for the good of the island and tourism.
